Customers in retail are very demanding and won't wait around
As times have changed since 2020, the internet selling online has increased dramatically some customers have abandoned retail stores whether in the high street or on commercial shopping areas. The customers that do venture out to visit stores to buy goods of almost any type but especially in retailing are today far less tolerant of poor service. If a retailer just does not get things right (such as great service) customers will just leave and either shop elsewhere or simply end up on the internet shops - and they generally never return.
Secondly, customer service certainly has suffered from a shortage of staff to attend to the customer, or the staff are not 'up to speed' with customer service. Either way the company loses customers. So service levels are one of the key aspects that will ensure customers will return to the store again and again.
But increasing service is not too easy to do. Many customers will not give their details like mobile phone number so the text messaging types of systems tend to be rather less use than some types of customer communication. So what can you possible do?
How to recall customers simply and effectively in retail stores
Customers hate waiting around! Did you notice? And they hate queues even more. If you have any area where customers will be waiting (or worse where there is a viewable queue) then its critical to expedite customers as fast as possible. Retail customers can be called as soon as they can be attended to with a paging system. And those are easy to use. Just give the customer a pager or buzzer (as they are also known) and note their name. When the service is ready, or their turn next staff just press a button and the customer will return. Customers see no queue and will comment on the great service. There are other enhancements too that are free from LRS UK such as the LRS Connect application that works on a browser for managing customers in retail environments.
Wait list systems make retailing easy
The LRS Connect application can easily show customers on screen and how long they have been waiting. And there's much more. You might set a certain length of time that customers should be served by.. let's assume 5 minutes for the example. After the customer has waited for 4 minutes, the customer on screen turns from green to amber, indicating that the time is running out. And at 5 minutes the customer on screen turn red - indicating that their service is being extended. As soon as its recall time, just press the button and customer will return. No queue, and fully managed throughout. It improves customer flow dramatically.
Call buttons can improve service in retailing
If there are counters for service that are often very busy or even unmanned there is a solution that will stop customers just standing there getting frustrated. It's a call button called a 'pronto'. Place this at the counter and when a customer needs service they press the button and message staff that they are there waiting. There are many options with this little call button, one or six buttons (all fully programmable) and these systems increase service levels and help efficiency. They also stop walkaways!
Security for retail shops
Security of the goods for sale in retail has been under substantial pressure for some time. Theft has improved dramatically, and so have threats to security staff. And then there's the shop security out of hours. While some companies sub-contract out of hours security, many also operate everything with security teams. Every theft is an affront to staying in business and increases the overall costs in times where costs are critical. It's something retail companies don't need. So how do we tackle that?
Security staff are basically the answer, but they are only as good as the communications they employ. There is today a vast array of walkie-talkies available for security staff. Key points that must be considered are:
- Simple to operate
- Group messaging is important
- Scrambling features are essential
- Two way radios must be robust
- Equipment maybe covert and out of sight to customers
- Lone worker and man down features are critical for staff safety in retailing
- Long range is preferential
With the current trends that the police are 'not interested' under a certain figure and won't attend if the thief is caught, its even more important than ever to ensure staff are safe. There have been some incidents where life is threatened. Take security seriously and always remember that the corporate manslaughter act makes the employer liable if employees do not have adequate safety equipment to help.
LRS UK has access to all walkie-talkie radios available (and legal) in the UK. It's easy to speak to our team, and we can even loan radios for testing. Call 01782 537000 or fill the form out to contact us.
We do have a number of specialised websites like twowayradiosuk.co.uk that show some of the products we sell to retailing customers.
