Manufacturer communication systems

You cannot over value safety in manufacturing. And security is essential.

Many times you might hear about very sad and distressing cases where someone has been injured while doing their job in many large businesses and manufacturing is certainly at risk in this respect. Its true that the Health and Safety Executive do manage manufacturing and also true that most companies do care about employee safety. So why do we hear about those cases where someone is severely injured or fatally wounded? It's a good question.

Companies have been the recipients of swathes of legislation to impose safe working within them; some of the fines and other things that will happen to any company that does not ensure a safe working environment would certainly wish they had 'followed the rules'.

Today there are many solutions available that can help manufacturers and large companies to ensure that there is sufficient solutions so that fatalities and severe injury remain a thing of the past.

Emergency call buttons

Taking a look at emergency on most manufacturers sites often shows a team of first aid employees that can respond to an accident. The emergency point shown above was developed by LRS UK and a major manufacturer who helped design the back plate for the emergency button. It is a very successful project that has now been running for years. And one of the things that came out of that association, was that the company in question used some of the call buttons for things other than emergencies.

Things like lockdown, first aid, parts, maintenance, sheq and security are all covered. In effect one emergency call button serviced SIX different sections of that business. And none of them were compromised in doing so. The system involves installing a number of emergency buttons around the premises with repeaters if necessary. The emergency team use a feature called 'cancel' and that function can save substantial time when there is an emergency. So here's how it works:

• Emergency button is pressed
• First aid team are all alerted and start to the destination they were advised in the message
• The first team member assesses the situation
• If others are not required, the first team member cancels the emergency call on the call button and team members are messaged to stand down
• If more first aid team members are needed then the cancel is not processed and other team members continue to arrive

LRS has sold thousands of this exact solution across the whole of the UK and because of it's very affordable price without compromising the system, many companies take advantage of that.

Logistics and warehousing solutions

When you have logistics and warehousing to contend with, you will already know how hard it can be in locating the truck, communicating with the driver, and getting the truck to the correct bay as expedited as possible. But doing just that can delay the unloading or loading of important shipping that has to go on schedule. Some companies spend literally hundreds of thousands of pounds on making that happen. However, some of the biggest companies in the world rarely spend £2000 on equipment that can do the same job - and you would certainly know that company - its massive. So what do they do?

LRS has a solution that can advise drivers to go to a specific bay at a specific time and the system is able to monitor each truck and whether it's been called on-screen. Here's how it works:

• When the truck arrives at the gatehouse, the driver is given a TEXT message pager. He is instructed to park the vehicle while he waits.
• When you need the truck for example in 'bay 6' the driver is messaged 'Proceed to bay 6'. And he does so.
• The pager is collected from the driver when he arrives at bay 6 and recirculates the pager back to the gate house.

The system (an app that runs on a browser) can create reports on timings and basic key metrics that are useful for analysis later. It's all THAT simple!

Safety and security on-site

As well as emergency buttons covered above, there will always be times when employees are not on-site and may be working away from the company maybe at a remote site that has no employees on that site. Another example might be a truck driver that you employ. So what if there are problems or an accident while employees are off-site? Companies have a responsibility to ensure staff safety and in fact two-way radios can be a massive help. But those walkie-talkies only travel approximately 5-8 Km range? Well not any more. And some of those radios have a feature for lone workers - like the driver, or the engineer on a remote company site as well as a man down feature too. With these new devices you can track, and monitor the safety and health of the employee throughout the UK.

Those new solutions are called PoC or LTE two-way radios. Range is not the issue any longer and the communications are as good as a mobile phone, but the system is NOT dependent on the mobile providers. Suffice to say that for remote employees of any kind this type of communications radio is a brilliant answer for safety and security.

Of course there is the question of security back on-site. Security guards can be subject to attacks and many other threats. By using regular digital (DMR) two way radios with those same lone worker and man down features it is possible to even 'listen in' to conversations that they might be having with people that are threatening the security in some way. Overall if you have the RIGHT radios then it's a great solution and there is no doubt that these systems can save lives.
